Mine site reclamation: methods and challenges

The end of mining operations does not mark the end of a mine site’s life.

After closure, facilities must be secured, the ground stabilized, tailings and water managed, and conditions created to support a sustainable environment.

Mine reclamation therefore aims to create a stable and safe site that will require as little intervention as possible in the future.

Reclamation adapted to each site

There is no single method that applies to every mine.

The appropriate solution depends on factors such as geology, topography, hydrogeological conditions, and the characteristics of waste rock and mine tailings.

Some materials remain relatively stable after extraction. Others can react when exposed to air and water, potentially releasing contaminants.

A proper site characterization therefore helps determine the most suitable reclamation measures.

Stabilizing the ground and mine tailings

Physical stability is one of the first priorities.

Slopes, waste rock piles and drainage structures must be able to withstand erosion and ground movement.

Mine tailings may also require specific measures. Depending on their properties, they can be covered, contained or managed in ways that reduce their exposure to water and oxygen.

The goal is to limit reactions that could affect environmental quality over the long term.

Managing water properly

Even after a mine closes, water continues to flow across the site and through the subsurface.

It is therefore important to plan how rainfall, snowmelt and groundwater will be managed.

Ditches, ponds and other structures can be used to control water flow. In some situations, water treatment may also remain necessary.

An effective reclamation plan must work under normal conditions as well as during periods of heavier rainfall.

Restoring soils and vegetation

Once the ground has been stabilized, some areas can receive a new layer of soil and be revegetated.

Plants help reduce erosion, stabilize soils and gradually reintegrate the site into its surrounding environment.

The choice of species must be adapted to the climate, soil type and local conditions.

The objective is not simply to make the site green quickly, but to establish vegetation that can remain healthy over time.

Reclaiming areas progressively when possible

Reclamation can sometimes begin before the mine is fully closed.

When an area is no longer in use, it may be stabilized and reclaimed while mining continues elsewhere on the site.

This approach makes it possible to observe how the selected solutions perform and adjust the methods before applying them on a larger scale.

Monitoring after closure

Reclamation work is not necessarily the final step.

Monitoring is generally required to assess the stability of structures, water quality, soil conditions and the development of vegetation.

Some issues can appear gradually. Monitoring the site over several years therefore helps identify changes early and allows corrective action to be taken when needed.

Planning for reclamation from the beginning

Successful mine reclamation is planned well before a mine closes.

The earlier the geological, hydrogeological and geochemical characteristics of a site are understood, the easier it becomes to anticipate its future behaviour and select durable solutions.
