A mining technical report can seem complex at first. It often includes a large amount of data, maps, tables, drilling results, assumptions and specialized terminology. However, when read with the right method, it becomes a very useful tool for understanding the real potential of a mining project.

The goal is not necessarily to read every detail from the start. What matters most is knowing where to look, which questions to ask and how to distinguish well-supported information from conclusions that are still uncertain.

Understand the purpose of the report

Before getting into the technical details, it is important to understand why the report was prepared. Is it a report on an early-stage exploration property? A mineral resource estimate? A technical update? A more advanced study?

The stage of the project directly affects the level of detail and the level of confidence in the conclusions. An early-stage exploration project should not be interpreted the same way as a project that is ready for development.

Check the date of the report

A technical report represents the state of knowledge at a specific point in time. Since its publication, new drilling, new analyses or changing economic conditions may have affected the understanding of the project.

It is therefore important to look at the date of the report, but also at the work completed since then. An older report can still be useful, but it should be read carefully if the project has evolved significantly.

Identify the responsible professionals

A mining technical report must be prepared or approved by qualified professionals. It is important to pay attention to who signed the report and which sections they are responsible for.

The qualified person plays an important role. This professional evaluates the data, the methods used, the project’s limitations and the reasonableness of the conclusions. Their experience and area of expertise can influence the level of confidence placed in the document.

Read the summary, then go further

The summary is a good starting point. It provides a quick understanding of the project, the work completed, the key results and the recommendations.

However, it is important not to stop there. The summary simplifies the information and does not always present all uncertainties. When an element seems important, such as a mineral resource estimate or a significant drilling result, it is worth checking the technical sections that explain it.

Evaluate the quality of the data

The value of a report depends greatly on the quality of the data used. Drilling results, samples, laboratory analyses and field observations must be properly documented.

It is important to verify how the data was collected, analyzed and validated. Impressive results lose value if the sampling methods are weak, if quality controls are incomplete or if historical data has not been properly verified.

Understand mineral resources

Figures related to mineral resources often attract attention. Tonnages, grades and contained metal quantities can appear very promising.

However, they must always be placed in context. Inferred resources do not have the same level of confidence as indicated or measured resources. A large tonnage does not automatically mean that a project is profitable.

It is also important to look at the assumptions used: cut-off grade, density, geological continuity, estimation method and geological model. The final number matters, but how it was obtained matters even more.

Read assumptions carefully

When a report includes an economic analysis, the assumptions must be reviewed carefully. Metal prices, operating costs, construction costs, metallurgical recovery, infrastructure and site access can all influence the value of the project.

A change in a single assumption can significantly affect the conclusions. Economic results should therefore be read as scenarios, not as certainties.

Pay attention to the risks

The risk section is often one of the most useful parts of the report. It helps identify what could limit, delay or change the development of the project.

Risks may be geological, technical, economic, environmental, regulatory or market-related. A good report does not try to hide them. It explains them and often recommends additional work to reduce them.

Understand the recommendations

The recommendations usually outline the next proposed steps for the project. They may include additional drilling, further analyses, improved modelling, metallurgical testing or other technical work.

This section helps clarify what still needs to be validated. A good recommendation should answer a clear question: which uncertainty needs to be reduced, and what decision could be made afterward?

Keep a critical mindset

A mining technical report is not a guarantee that a mine will be developed. It is a technical snapshot of a project at a specific moment in time. It can show strong potential, but it does not remove all risks.

A good reading approach means understanding the context, checking the data, analyzing the assumptions, identifying the limitations and reviewing the recommendations. It is not only the number of pages that matters, but the consistency between the data, the interpretation and the conclusions.
